The Vine Award was given out on 18th October, at the last event of the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival 2015 at the Oe Noh Theatre.

Judging of a wide range of public entries, each of 6 seconds, the works were divided into the official Vine categories of Style (fashion), Comedy, Dance and Music. Guest jurists made comments and selections from the nominated pieces in each category before selecting the winning pieces and presenting the awards.

First of all, emcee Hachimitsu Tsukitei appeared on stage to explain about how Vine works. Vine is a short-form video sharing service where users can share six second-long looping video clips. The service was founded in 2013 and many famous creators called “Viners” were born through the app.

The guest jurists were: Ichiya Nakamura as Chairman of the Jury and an active TV personality. Yu Sasamoto, the President of Twitter Japan, comedians Run Pumps whose video was played 2,000,000 times in Vine, 9-year-old dancer Ririri of Nanba Grand Kagetsu, popular Viners Brian, DJ H!RA, Viners from abroad, and Yuichi Kimura all joined to the competition.

Only one work was chosen to get the award with prize money of 200,000 yen. The competition started with the Comedy section, and “Bicycle,” which shows the mistake of a rider getting on a guardrail instead of his bicycle was selected from 10 nominated works.

Next, a dance piece by three men who wore black suits and sunglasses was selected from five works in the Dance & Music section. A video “All Over Again” from the Trick section was selected from many works that had a high level of editing technique and creativity. Nakamura commented, “This work is outstanding due to the creator’s great technique and sense of the title.”

The last was the non-genre section. The piece “A Man Who Skips a Rope 3 Times Inside a Bag” by comedian duo Bikon! was selected.

Finally the overall award winner was announced after all of the nominated works had a screening one more time. “Bicycle” was selected as the winner, then all juries came up to the stage. Run Pumps said, “the work used Vine’s benefits, was easy to shoot and post, in good way.” Kimura commented, “The simple idea got a win not because of its great technique.” And Nakamura, the Chairman of Jury added “I’m surprised about Vine, it is such a interesting media. I felt many possibilities through watching various videos.”

With a big applause from audience, the Vine Award 2015 ceremony closed.
