SHOZO MAKINO AWARD
Founded in 1958 by the Committee To Honor Shozo Makino, a Kyoto born filmmaker often regarded as the father of Japanese cinema, the award is given to filmmakers who contributed to the development of Japanese cinema. Kyoto Citizen Film Festival has selected and awarded the recipients from the 1st to the 19th recipient. Starting in 1977, the Toei Koto Studio Park has taken over the operation of the award ceremony and selection as the voting system evolved over the years. In 1982, Shozo Makino Award Corner had been set up at Cinema Culture Hall, exhibiting all the past recipients and various memorabilia. In 1990, the voting system changed and the award was given based on a council system. In 1977, the award ceremony took place during the 1st edition of the Kyoto Film Festival. Since 1999, the 44th award was given at the Kyoto Film Festival and starting in 2014, Kyoto International Film and Art Festival will take over the operation of the award ceremony and announce the 46th recipient.

TOSHIRO MIFUNE AWARD
Toshiro Mifune is one of best-known Japanese movie stars of all time. He appeared in a number of Akira Kurosawa films such as Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Red Beard, as well as movies directed by Hiroshi Inagaki such as Samurai Banners and The Rickshaw Man. He is an actor who represents the best of Japan’s post-WWII movies. The Toshiro Mifune award has been newly created for the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival. This will be an award given to the actor who is most likely to make international impact on the film industry. The award aims to support actors who play a major roles on the world’s stage, just as Toshiro Mifune did.

Special Screening in KYOTO
There are unbelievable events, shocking and scandalous affairs, and other real-life dramas which occurred at the time. These resonate in the hearts and minds of people because they are actual events which took place.How should one think about the variety of juxtaposing real-life experiences in the face of extraordinary experiences? Once again, what is this move about? Through the implementation of debates and other events with people who were involved in the work, documentaries taking another look at what it means to live, and the screening of nonfiction works based on real stories allows us to approach the essence of this work.A must-see line up, including“Laugh is”, featuring interviews with 107 groups of Yoshimoto entertainers, and the hit documentary,“The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On”.
TV DIRECTOR‘S MOVIE
The TV Director’s Movie, a tradition which started from the second Okinawa International Movie Festival, aims to be an ambitious work outside of existing genres, and is a co- production between some existing television stations and Yoshimoto Kogyo Co., Ltd. Beginning in 2014, a portion of the productions at the planning stage saw the involvement of Aeon Entertainment Co., Ltd. in production planning. This collaboration created a seamless mechanism for production, distribution, and screening, and aims to create a new trend in world cinema. Following their work in Okinawa after this project is finished; the workgroup will be involved in a program in which a viewer can take in the entire series in one fell swoop.
Special Invitation
The Special Screenings this year is a lineup consisting of a variety of works from epics to more artistic works, and include movies to be screened early ahead of the theatrical release. In addition, this time only viewers will be able to enjoy works on a large theater screen which otherwise would not be possible at the Kyoto International Film Festival.This year will see special screenings which transcend genre and category and include works that can be enjoyed by movie fans and the general public alike and include, At the turning point of our times, Fumi Nikaido stars in“When I Was Most Beautiful”, a human drama produced on the 70th year after the war. Sideline and Our Diary which see the appearance of both Korean and Japanese influential male movie idols, as well as My Name Is..., a directorial debut from fashion designer Agnes b.
The 2nd Toshiro Mifune Award ceremonial event
From October 3 to October 16,“Red Beard”starring Toshiro Mifune will screen at TOHO Cinemas Nijo for the 3rd“New Gozen 10-ji no eigasai(10AM Film Festival)”.Toshiro Mifune has been selected as a 2016 honoree on one of Hollywood’s renowned tourist spots, the“Hollywood Walk of Fame”. To be screened on the 16th“, Red Beard”is one of Mifune’s outstanding works and a masterpiece by the great filmmaker, director Akira Kurosawa. Newly assigned to the Koishikawa Clinic is a young intern(Yuzo Kayama), training under a veteran doctor(Toshiro Mifune). Through the medical practice, the film portrays how the intern learns of the lives of destitute patients and matures as a doctor and human being, realizing true humanity. After the screening, Mr. Shiro Mifune, son of Toshiro Mifune, will give a greeting message to the audience.
YUYA UCHIDA ROCK’N ROLL MOVIE 2 DAYS
Making a splash in last year’s festival, here’s the second“Yuya Uchida presents”special project! Again this year, 2 of Mr. Uchida works will be screened“; Erotic Liaisons”directed by Koji Wakamatsu and written for the screen by Mr. Uchida himself. The other,“Dioxin from Fish!”directed by Ryudo Uzaki. Don’t miss the chemical reaction when rock’n roll meets film!
SILENT FILMS
The program screens, masterpieces of silent films featuring Matsunosuke Onoe,Japan’s First Big Movie Star, Buster Keaton, one of American comedy kings, and Roscoe Arbuckle, plus Toy Film Special, the roots of Japanese animation, and Our Gang films, all accompanied with live narration and live performance. Continuing from last year’s festival, we propose a new way of film appreciation through a visual and audio collaboration.
RISSEI FILM SCHOOL
Kyoto is the place where films in Japan was born. This Rissei Cinema Project will be held where the first film screening in Japan was held. Screening in this historical place is sure to bring special experience cinema complex or large theaters cannot bring. Here, titled“Rissei Film School”, holds screening for all ages to enjoy and learn about films from multiple angles.

The Kyoto International Film and Art Festival is not the only film festival in Kyoto!A variety of concepts from the unique birthplace of movies has led to a great number of artistic movie festivals and movie events currently being held. In this category, starting with movie screenings recommended by peo1le from the movie festival held in Kyoto, viewers can enjoy the features of each particular film festival.
The Kyoto International Student Film Festival is the largest student film festival, and is planned and managed by university students from around the Kansai area centering on Kyoto. Independent films produced by students from around the world are collected and reviewed. Students create the opportunity for the movie screening, and aim to create future movie lovers.
Held annually on the July 15th, the day of Yoiyoimiya Gion Festival, the Gion shopping stree(t from Gion Shijo to Yasaka Shrine) becomes a screening theater. The festival screens Kyoto related films and videos including the Gion Commercial award.The film i“s TaxiDriverGionTaroTHEMOVIE-ToAll You Deserted Dudes”, directed by Munenori Nagano of Europe-Kikaku, a theater group based in Kyoto performing across Japan.
The Shinkyogoku Film Festival began in 2002, and as of 2013 the venue has expanded to encompass the entire area from Shinkyogoku to Kyoto Machinaka, including the areas surrounding Kiyamachi, Oike, Karasuma, and Shijo. It has started againthisyearasthe“KyotoMachinaka Music/Film Festival”with music as its theme.
The Kyoto International Indie Film Festival has been held since 2007, and will celebrate its 9th edition this year. During the Kyoto International Film Festival period, October 17 will see the screening of the films which won the fourth Kyoto Movie Award at The Kyoto International Indie Film Festival in their entirety. The screening will take place at the Ooe Nohgakudo .Under the theme of“remember the era of small movies– from Kyoto to the world”, we will ask the questions “what is the role people’s sensibilities play in movies?”and“what is the role people’s knowledge play in movies?”The Kyoto International Indie Movie Festival will convey superior values and continue to grow sharing the important things which exist in modern people’s lives and leaving that legacy to future generations.
